Tomorrow, March 25, they’ll donate 15% of your bill to <a

They’re regularly changing the dishes available as part of the promotion and I expect them to change again today.

The Flying Fig is also offering a 3 for $33 deal. It’s timed to coincide with the Cleveland International Film Festival. And they just debuted several new spring menu dishes. On top of that, they had several appetizing specials tonight. Meat, cheese, bread… It should be delicious and pretty much fool-proof to boot, right? Otherwise fine restaurants bungle burgers, usually by over-fancifiying them. American cheese melts. Your fancy cheddar cheese doesn’t melt as well and that’s important. Making the burger too big, getting clever with the bread… It goes on and on.

Buckeye Beer Engine has restored my faith in the burger. They have a lot of novelty burgers but it’s okay because they pay attention to the fundamentals. For instance, the bun is a quality bun but more importantly it’s a burger bun. Since they’ve proven that they can make a delicious cheeseburger, I’m more than happy to try some more elaborate burgers. While I was eating my fatty melt, I noticed one of their newest creations: the double sasquatch. Two eight ounce patties with barbecue sauce and an onion ring. That second patty seems like overkill to me but I’m looking forward to trying a single sasquatch. I’ve also had my eye on their The Bacon Fatty Melt

I guess I should say a word about the fatty melt I just mentioned. The basic facts should be obvious from the picture. I’ll only add two small observations. First, it was more than a gimmick. The grilled cheese sandwiches were well done and would have been excellent on their own but cheese, bacon and buttery bread are a perfect match for ground meat. Second, tomorrow (November 30, 2008) may be your last chance to try the bacon fatty melt at the Beer Engine. It’s their November burger-of-the-month so I assume it will disappear on Monday. I recommend it.

Buckeye Beer Engine Sells 40,000th Burger

cleveland

food

restaurant

buckey beer engine

burger
<guid

In honor of this momentous milestone they’re going to award a prize to the customer who orders the 50,000th burger. I don’t know what the prize is.

They opened on March 13, 2008. They announced that the 40,000th burger was sold on November 7, 2008. That’s 240 days and about 167 burgers a day. At that pace, they’ll sell another 10,000 burgers in 60 days. If you assume that they’re closed three days for various holidays, I guess that the 50,000th burger will be ordered on January 8, 2009. I wasn’t really careful with the arithmetic so I’d be happy to have someone check it.

Of course, this aproach is hopelessly naive. I’m sure that there are seasonal variations and I assume tht the burger orders are higher now than closer to the opening. Hopefully, they’ll make some interim announcements to give us a little extra guidance.

Also, 167 burgers a day? I never would have guessed that. Very impressive. As I said, they deserve it. I haven’t gotten around to eating their burger but I think I’ll get it on my next visit which I’m sure will be much sooner then January 8th.
